- First buy yourself the above tally clicker counter from Amazon.
- Have a total amount that you don’t want to go over before going to the store.
- Shop at the most reasonable priced markets in your area like Trader Joes or Smiths. The other ones (and you know who they are) are a ripoff, and they know it like Wholefoods.
- Use your counter for each item put into your cart and round off to the next dollar.
- Try not to put anything in your cart over $5. You can find cheese, meat, cereal, butter, bread, eggs, and toilet paper for under $5. if you look. They won’t be name brand but rather store brand and certainly avoid gourmet labels.
- Try not to purchase alcohol.
Using this counter you can get your total within one dollar when you get to the checkout line so you won’t be surprised. Of course, around the holidays it is impossible to buy a holiday dinner for under $100. But with this counter and shopping for under $5., I have stayed under $100 and within a dollar at checkout. I used to throw everything I liked in the cart and was shocked at checkout. Not anymore.
I used to use a tally counter just like this when I did traffic studies for the city counting cars at an intersection that had requested a Stop Sign. I was happy they still make them. Who knew I’d be counting dollars 40 years later due to the high cost of food.
Good luck. Happy saving.
Switch to Top Ramen and Green Tea. Yep, gets boring but you lose weight and gain dollars. (I would die first) 🙂

Not that grim. These tips are for budget-conscience people like my daughter-in-law who loves the counter. Men not so much. Or for those who complain about their grocery bill. In Biden’s world I now “eat to live not live to eat.” No Top Ramen however.
